The Jaboitcaba fruit is an exotic berry that is native to Brazil, of which we grow at our orchard in Childers QLD. We have over 400 trees and are one of the largest growers in Queensland. The Jaboticaba tree is a truly sub-tropical tree that loves rain and warmer weather, so it grows perfectly in the Bundaberg region, especially in the fertile red soil.
The fruit itself grows directly on the branches and trunks of the tree. It is incredible to see a tree in full flower and fruit. The fruit is quite pest and disease resistant making it easy to grow (aside from it taking 8 years to fruit!). The fruit is also tasty to eat…the skins are a little tart, but the flesh is sweet and delicious - think a grape x lychee flavour.
Here at Ohana, we love to make whatever we can from the fruit. Due to its sweet flavour and awesome black skin colour, it is great for making ports and liqueurs. It also makes a lovely table wine and even apple cider! We also make jams and gelato ice-cream using the fruit. It is such a versatile fruit and tastes delicious in every product we make.
So basically, it is a rare fruit you won't find in Australia very often and makes delicious wines, ports, liqueurs and ice-cream. You can try all these amazing products by visiting our Cider House and Winery in East Bundaberg, it is worth it!
