Top 5 Things to Do in Childers

Top 5 Things to Do in Childers

Apr 29 2017

Childers is a charming little town, situated on the Bruce Highway approximately four hours north of Brisbane. The vibrant red soil, rolling green hills and abundance of activities makes this scenic town the ideal stop for a day or two. Here's our top five activities to spend a day in Childers.

  1. Start your morning right, with a coffee at The Paragon Theatre and Espresso Bar. Have a chat owners Nigel and Merissa about the history of this grand old building while they make your brew - or if you're lucky you may even be able to poke your head in and have a look around this heritage listed building. If you're feeling peckish, try some of their homemade goodies made from local Childers produce, or check out the Cane Fire Cheese House next door.

  2. Next up, meet the furry, scaly and friendly locals at Snakes Downunder Reptile Park and Zoo. Don't be fooled by the name - this place has more than just snakes. You can get up close and personal with "free-range" kangaroos and emus, listen to an informative talk on koalas, handle non-venomous snakes, watch a 'deadly' snake show and my personal favourite - watch Macca the 3 metre croc getting his daily feed. The park runs to a schedule, so be sure to check out their website to catch all the action.

  3. After all the action, it's time for something a little more relaxing. Visit Ohana Winery and Exotic Fruits and join Josh and Zoe on a tour of their exotic fruit orchard, sampling any in-season tropical fruit. On any given day, there are usual five or six different exotic fruits to sample, straight from the orchard - favourites include Chocolate Pudding Fruit, Starfruit, and Peanut Butter Fruit. After the gentle and interactive stroll through the orchard, pop into the air-conditioned winemaking cellar to learn about how to take fresh local fruit and turn it into wine. Next, head into the cellar door to sample the range of award-winning fruit wines. Try the Gold Medal winning semi-sweet Lychee Wine, or perhaps the off-dry Mango Wine. You may be surprised by the flavours of the wine (it's not as sweet as you might expect from a fruit wine - it's wine, not juice, after all!), and you'll love having a taste of the decadent liqueurs - the delicate Chocolate and Lemon Myrtle, traditional Limoncello or firm favourite Cold Drip Coffee.

  4. Once you've stocked up on your new favourite wines, head over to Mammino's Gourmet Icecream for a real taste of Childers. This family-run business has been churning out mouthwatering creamy classics for twenty years, and regularly appear at festivals and shows all over the state. You can see where it all began, and grab a classic Vanilla or Chocolate with fresh roasted macadamia nut pieces, or perhaps try something a bit more adventurous...avocado icecream, anyone!?

  5. After your big day seeing the sights of Childers, head back to your accommodation (there is a heap to choose from - whether it be a motel in town, luxurious glamping tents or a scenic spot to park your caravan) to freshen up before dinner. We recommend checking out Mollydooker's Cafe and Bar in Apple Tree Creek, just a few minutes north of Childers. The Canadian/Australian inspired menu offers up everything from sliders and wings, to fresh salads and soups, to more hearty meals of chicken, fish and steak. They also have a great drinks list, with some fun cocktails (check out their fresh Limoncello Mojito or Reviver Black Russian, featuring our new favourite Ohana Winery Liqueurs!).

We think that's a pretty great way to spend a day enjoying the top five things to do in Childers. If you have a little more time to spend, we also recommend checking out Woodgate Beach, Flying High Bird Sanctuary and the other wineries in town. Whether you have a few hours, a few days or even a few weeks, we're sure you're going to love everything the charming little town of Childers has to offer.
